There was a little girl named Catherine Violet Hubbard, who was, by all accounts, very special. Catherine's mom and dad would hear the little girl talking to the creatures she'd meet each day, whispering to them to be sure and tell their friends that she was kind, hoping that they'd always come back and visit. We're sure that those animals did indeed come back and visit her. She was, after all, one of the best friends any animal could ever have.
Then one terrible day, all this love and compassion seemed to come to an end. An armed gunman stormed an Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 children and six adults. Catherine was one of the little souls who lost her life that day.
But, there was no way to snuff out all that love. Catherine's mother and father knew that Catherine's spirit and heart needed to live on and that it would be with animals. Where else would it be, after all?
So, the Hubbards partnered with The Animal Center in Newtown, to begin creating the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, a place where all creatures, great and small, can know the touch of a kind hand and be safe from harm. A place where children and adults can come and learn, where people can see a vision for a world where animals are treated with compassion and love.

What Can I Do?
Don't' assume anyone will think about your pet in a crisis. You need to plan ahead and write down the information that is needed.
Decide who you’d like the caregiver to be, and talk with them in advance. Have a backup caregiver if possible. Explain that you have someone lined up for care, but would appreciate their help should that person be unavailable. Make a plan with them to access your pets in your absence.
Call your lawyer and/or estate planner to ask about financial options for your pet. There are a number of ways to provide support to pets and caregivers, including special wills and trusts.
A gift that will save shelter pets long into the future is a wonderful legacy to consider. To help you provide for shelter pets through your estate, DASF has promulgated model language which you can share with your estate planning attorney. We request that you contact DASF before leaving any testamentary gifts, so we can work with you to ensure the best results from your gift. Please email [email protected] and include your name, city, and daytime phone so we may contact you.
