What to Do at the First Signs of Aging
Your dog has reached seniority. They may wake up in the morning feeling stiff or have difficulty jumping out of the car. This may bother some owners who are used to seeing their dog romping around all day, but the good news is that if you swiftly take care of your pet when you see early signs of arthritis, you have a good chance of preventing the condition from progressing.
It is, therefore, vital that you take your geriatric dog to the veterinarian at the first signs of lameness. This will help your vet rule out other more serious conditions such as Lyme disease or bone cancer.
Home Relief for Arthritis in Dogs
1. Keep Your Dog Lean
The leaner your dog is, the less strain there will be on his joints. Try to not overfeed them, especially if they do not get enough exercise. If your pet is obese, consult your vet so he/she can plan a weight loss program to help them shed the pounds. There are also many prescription dog foods available today that will help reduce weight.
2. Invest in Ramps
If you dog has difficulty getting around, there are special ramps that can help them climb up the bed or up those painful stairs. These ramps can also make it easier for them to get in and out of a vehicle.
3. Follow Prescription Diets
The food brand Hill's produces a prescription diet called J/D (joint diet), created specifically for dogs suffering from arthritis. Because it is a prescription diet, your dog will need to be evaluated in order to have it prescribed. There are many testimonials written by owners who have witnessed great improvement once they put their dog on this special diet.
4. Offer Comfort
If your dog sleeps on the floor, give him/her a nice comfy bed so that he/she will wake up with less stiffness in the morning. For people and pets suffering for arthritis, getting out of bed after a long night of sleep can be really painful, so it is best if the dog sleeps on something soft in order to minimize the discomfort.
5. Exercise Your Dog
It may sound odd but exercise may actually help your arthritic dog. Of course, the exercise should not be strenuous. A moderate level of exercise will strengthen muscles and ligaments which helps provide support for the joints.
6. Create Slip-Free Areas
I used to see poor arthritic dogs at our vet's office. After lying on the floor, they had difficulty getting up and would slip. You could almost feel their pain.
If you toss a few rugs on your tiled or wooded floors, your dog will really appreciate it. If your pet is having trouble getting up and walking due to hip problems, place a towel under his abdomen. Grab the two ends and gently pull upwards. By lifting your dog, it reduces the strain on his hips.
How Arthritis Is Detected
Arthritis is detected though a physical examination and x-rays. Large dog breeds that are 7 years of age or older seem to be the most affected, but arthritis can affect just about any breed.
Once diagnosed, your vet will prescribe some anti-inflammatory drugs, often known as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). The most common ones include Rimadyl, Previcox, Etogesic, and Deramaxx. Be sure to discuss the side effects with your vet as Rimadyl and Previcox have been known to cause major health problems in some dogs.
NSAID Alternative Treatments
This is not really a medication but rather a supplement. When dogs have degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, their joints lack good quality joint fluid and cushioning which results in bone degeneration. Glucosamine helps lubricate the joints.
Also known as Glyco-Flex or Cosequin, this supplement is derived from a mussel called Perna canaliculus (hence the fishy odor). Always consult with your vet before giving your dog any supplements. Not seeing a vet may worsen symptoms or cause a delay in treatment because your dog may be suffering from other serious disorders not related to arthritis.
This medication is injected into the muscle and spreads throughout your pet's body. The maximum effect is felt after 48 hours and relief lasts for 72 hours. The injection works by stimulating cartilage and fluid production in joints. There are very few side effects when compared to NSAIDs. In some cases, dogs may get an upset stomach post-injection, and in very rare cases, they may suffer from a bleeding disorder. Discuss this option with your vet.
There is an increasing number of practitioners offering this option for our four-legged friends. Dogs show great physical improvement after an acupuncture session, especially those with chronic disorders such as arthritis. This practice is surely worth a try should you be looking for an alternative therapy to NSAID.
While aspirin is not really recommended for long-term use in pets, under a vet's supervision it may be used for arthritis relief. Discuss this option with your vet and discuss the potential side effects. Never start your dog on an aspirin regimen without first consulting your vet.
Arthritic Dogs Can Lead Healthy Lives
An arthritic dog is not like a rusty car soon to be demolished. On the contrary, many arthritic pets lead healthy lives thanks to veterinary advances and tips you can easily follow at home. Some people have witnessed their senior dogs returning to their rambunctious "puppy" personalities after using some of the therapies listed above. Hopefully, these tips will help your dog feel better and maybe even extend his/her life.
Questions & Answers
Question: My five-year-old American Cocker Spaniel is limping on her rear left leg. Why is this? She has no injuries.
Answer: A common cause for this is a knee injury. Tearing or partial tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament is quite common in dogs. Another possibility is a general soft tissue injury -like a deep muscle bruise or twist of a joint - similar to a sprain or strain. There can also be an issue with the hip or just general arthritis flare-up. Although you may not have witnessed an injury, injuries can still take place because we can't see what is happening internally and a dog can injure a leg without manifesting obvious signs of pain like yelping.
Question: My dog is 10 years old. She has started limping on her front paw the past few days. Any ideas what may be causing this?
Answer: In a dog of this age, there may be several conditions going on and this warrants a vet visit to play if safe. A simple sprain can be a cause and these tend to generally improve with rest in about 48-72 hours; however there are several more causes to consider. If your dog is able to bear weight, then that usually rules out emergency issues like fractures or nerve damage. Other possibilities include elbow dysplasia, a pulled tendon/ligament, bicipital tenosynovitis, arthritis, a thorn/splinter in the paw, tick-borne disease, a type of tumor (bone cancer, a nerve sheath tumor etc). This is just a general list as there can be more possibilities. The best option is to see your vet. Your vet may x-ray the leg to gain better insight.
Question: My 6-year-old Jack Russell terrier can't use his back legs. Why?
Answer: Loss of function of back legs can be due to a variety of factors. Anemia from a bleeding cancer, severe arthritis, orthopedic and spinal issues, muscle disorders are just a few possibilities. Your dog is fairly young, so this is worthy of investigating with the help of your vet. If the problems mostly occur on slippery floors, here are some tips until you see the vet:/dogs/How-to-Keep-an-Old-Dog...
Question: My 12-year-old pug won’t put weight on one of her hind legs. I don’t think she had any traumatic injury. Why is this?
Answer: So sorry your pug is going through this. Three possible common scenarios come to mind: she may have sustained a sprain or strain of a muscle. She may have a luxating patella. This happens when the kneecap in small dogs pops out of place. This can happen suddenly. Surgery may sometimes be needed to repair this. Another possibility, is a torn ligament of the knee which makes the knee very unstable causing dogs to not bear weight on it or toe touching. I think seeing your vet is in order for a physical exam and possibly, x-rays ro see what is going on. Other things that may be going on include a fracture (usually in this case, the pain is intense and there is swelling), exacerbation of degenerative joint disease (arthritis) and trauma to the paw.
Question: Are there dog physical therapists?
Answer: Yes and it is an expanding career path that is gaining more and more popularity. To look for one you can search in the Canine Rehabilitation Institute database. The goal is to offer dogs improved pain reduction, healing, and function injured, recovering, or aging. It may encompass therapies such as cold laser, passive range of motion exercises, underwater treadmill etc.

Our 7 year old miniature schnauzer has a right rear leg limp after sleeping or resting for a period of time. Once she gets moving, she walks fine. It first occurred after she received her rabies shot in the right hip. She's been on rimadyl for about 7 weeks and we've exercised her but not excessively. The condition has not improved but she does not appear to be in pain. Our vet is puzzled. Your thoughts please.

I have a 16 month 65 lb male lab. He would sometimes limp after playing his daily dose of fetch, when this happened we would just have him rest for the remainder of the day and his limping would go away. We noticed recently that after getting up from lying down for a while, he would limp for a little bit. Yesterday, after playing fetch, he started limping significantly. We had him rest and even this morning his limping did not go away like it normally would. I felt around the area, his right front leg and paw, no signs of any cuts/thorns etc, he doesn’t whimper when I touch and feel around it.
Could this be a sign of early Arthritis?? Or a possible strain that we didn’t know about that has never fully healed?

Dietary supplements to help arthritic animals
Helpful dietary supplements to consider giving pets with arthritis include anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil, and additional vitamins, especially vitamin C. (You can supplement your arthritic pet’s diet with vitamin C in a range from 250 mg to 2,000 mg, depending on your pet’s size.) Glucosamine is also helpful in some animals with arthritis, as well as herbal alfalfa and garlic.
When considering dietary supplements, remember to work with a holistic veterinarian to fine-tune them to best meet your pet’s needs. It is also wise to introduce one supplement at a time and try it for at least 3-4 weeks before changing it or adding additional supplements. This allows you to closely monitor your pet’s reaction to the supplement and make sure he doesn’t experience any problems with the new addition to his diet.
Where Do I Get Homeopathic Remedies?
Homeopathic remedies are incredibly easy to find!
You can buy them online from Amazon, or you can just google the remedy you need if you want to order them elsewhere online. You can also find them at any good health food store, including Whole Foods or Vitamin Shoppe. Look for the 30C potency … this is the most popular and is the easiest to use.
Homeopathic remedies are a naturally effective way to help your dog on his way to recovery! Why not try a few of these and see for yourself how effective they can be … without any risk of side effects!

Can Dogs & Cats Get Osteoarthritis?
As our companions age, many will develop arthritis, a common degenerative joint problem. Gradually you may notice that your feline friend no longer jumps up on the counters or furniture as easily. Your dog may hesitate to jump in the car or will climb stairs more slowly. You may notice your companion is stiff upon rising. These are all signs of painful joints. Up to 25–30% of companion animals suffer from osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a chronic, slowly progressing condition that is caused by the deterioration of the cartilage surrounding a joint. As this deterioration progresses, the bony structures begin to rub against one another causing pain and discomfort. Hip Dysplasia is a genetic disease that leads to joint deterioration and arthritis. It is more common in large dog breeds. These and other degenerative joint disorders involving cartilage and joint deterioration can be treated quite successfully with a comprehensive treatment program developed for the animal.
Natural Treatment for Arthritis & Joint Health in Dogs & Cats
There are many ways ways to treat arthritis and joint stiffness or soreness from a "natural" approach. While NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) such as Rimadyl, Deramaxx, EtoGesic and others are commonly prescribed for arthritis, I prefer to reserve their use until after all other means have been exhausted and the animal is still showing signs of suffering. NSAIDs can be damaging to the liver and gastrointestinal system when taken over long periods of time and can have other side effects as well. NSAIDs provide pain relief, but do nothing to help repair damaged tissue and prevent further deterioration. Arthritis and joint pain can often be controlled for years using diet, supplements, herbs and acupuncture, and many animals may never need NSAIDs.
One of the best defenses and treatments for arthritis is a high quality Glucosamine/Chrondroitin sulfate supplement. Glucosamine stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), important proteins found in cartilage, and proteoglycans, the water-holding molecules that make up cartilage. Glucosamine has been shown not only to help with pain, but also to rehabilitate damaged cartilage. These nutrient compounds may also have anti-inflammatory activity within the joints. A typical dose would be at least 1000 mgs. per 50 lbs. of body weight daily, but this should be determined for your companion's specific needs with your veterinarian. I often recommend that dogs be started on a good joint supplement that includes Glucosamine by the time they are 8 or 9 for larger breeds, and 10 or 11 for smaller breeds, even when no symptoms are present. Preventing joint deterioration can go a long way to easing the effects of aging for your companion. Here are several good products offered by Only Natural Pet Store:
- Genesis Resources Joint Support Plus
- Genesis Resources GCM Plus Hip & Joint
- Only Natural Pet Glucosamine + Asta
- Only Natural Pet Lubri-Ease
- In Clover Connectin Joint Supplement
- Vetri-Science Glyco-Flex
"These and other degenerative joint disorders involving cartilage and joint deterioration can be treated quite successfully with a comprehensive treatment program developed for the animal."
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), is another supplement used in the prevention and treatment of arthritis. MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in every cell of the body, which helps to maintain healthy connective tissue and membrane flexibility. It can assist in reducing inflammation and swelling associated with arthritis and other diseases or injuries.
- Vetri-Science MSM
- Integrative Therapeutics MSM with Glucosamine Sulfate
- Flying Basset Organics MSM
Diet is a key factor in the treatment of any chronic condition. Feeding your companion a quality diet is the foundation of good health, and this is the most important thing you can do for your dog or cat. Many animals with chronic conditions such as arthritis have shown dramatic improvement on a raw food or home-prepared diet. Please see our articles What You Need to Know About Your Pet's Food and All About Raw Food for more information on this important health topic. Some people are not comfortable with feeding raw food. If this is true for you, I recommend a combination of home-prepared cooked meals, a very high quality canned food or dehydrated food, and the best quality kibble you can afford. If the animal has food or environmental allergies, these must be addressed, as allergies can contribute to inflammation and many degenerative health conditions.
Weight control is of utmost importance. An overweight animal will suffer much more from arthritis pain and the disease process will be accelerated. Gentle exercise is very helpful whether the animal is overweight or not. For dogs the ideal exercise is swimming or using underwater treadmills. Dog “spas” and therapy pools are becoming more common all over the country. See the website for the Association of Canine Water Therapy for a practitioner and pool listing in your state.
Digestive Enzymes & Probiotics are essential. They aid the digestion and assimilation of the nutrients in cooked and processed foods. Poor digestion and leaky gut exacerbate and contribute to chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, allergies and degenerative conditions. Maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal system will go a long way in preventing these complications. Good options here are digestive enzymes and probiotics.
Essential Fatty Acid Supplements (preferably one with fish oil) help reduce inflammation and can be quite helpful in the treatment of joint problems. In addition, essential fatty acids help maintain gastrointestinal health and aid in the treatment of allergies. I often recommend giving a higher dose than recommended on the label. If your companion develops loose stools, reduce the dosage a bit to allow the system to adjust.
There are a variety of herbal remedies and supplements available for joint support, which can be safely used in conjunction with Glucosamine and other nutraceuticals. Keep in mind, however, that response to these or any remedies will vary by individual. It is sometimes necessary to try one at a time until the best option is found (giving the supplement or remedy a minimum of two weeks, and preferably longer, to determine effectiveness):
- Only Natural Pet Get Up & Go
- Animals' Apawthecary Alfalfa/Yucca Blend
- Only Natural Pet Lubri-Herb Herbal Formula
Chinese herbs can also be very beneficial in the treatment of joint disorders. It is best to have the guidance of a veterinarian trained in Chinese Medicine to select the proper remedy for your companion's specific condition. Chinese herbal remedies that may be helpful include:
- Health Concerns Mobility 2
- Nature's Herbs for Pets Joint Relief
"There are a variety of herbal remedies and supplements available for joint support, which can be safely used in conjunction with Glucosamine and other nutraceuticals. Keep in mind, however, that response to these or any remedies will vary by individual."
Adequan® is a polysulfated glycosaminoglycan similar to Glucosamine. It is also a cartilage component similar to Glucosamine, but Adequan is derived from the windpipe cartilage of cattle. Adequan has numerous beneficial effects including the inhibition of harmful enzymes involved in joint cartilage destruction, stimulation of cartilage repair, and increasing joint lubrication. Adequan is only available by injection from a veterinarian.
Acupuncture can be extremely helpful for animals with arthritic conditions. I have seen dramatic improvement in both dogs and cats with arthritis following acupuncture and with regular treatments. For a list of practitioners in your area see the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association Directory.
Chiropractic adjustments and massage can also be quite beneficial as an animal will often contort their spine when trying to move in a way to minimize joint pain. For a list of practitioners see the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association website, or the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork website.
Constitutional Homeopathy using single, high potency remedies has also produced good results for some arthritis patients. For a list of practitioners see The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy website.
Additional supplements such as high-potency antioxidants are also commonly recommended for joint support. The inflammatory reactions of arthritic joints contributes to the oxidation activity of free radicals in the body, which is very damaging to cells and can increase the risk of cancer. Some antioxidant supplements offered by Only Natural Pet Store include:
- Only Natural Pet Whole Food Antioxidant Blend
- Only Natural Pet CoQ10
10 Things you can do around the home that will help your dog with arthritis.
1. Incorporate Morning Oily Fish Treats
One jar or can of salmon, sardines or mackerel is pretty cheap at the grocery store and are natural foods that studies show decrease inflammation associated with arthritis. Give your arthritic dog one or two sardines each morning for an omega fatty acid boost.
For best results, make sure the sardines are packed in water or oil and not tomato or spicy variables. Give the treats daily so your arthritic dog benefits from the compound effects of fatty fish oil.
2. Disable your Doorbell
I know you weren’t expecting to see this, but you came for different ideas right? I did this at my own home because the sound of the doorbell makes my 90 pound arthritic dog go bananas. On one occasion he flew down the stairs so fast, he slipped, fell and limped for the rest of the day….and that was the day the doorbell was disabled. I can only imagine how many solicitors rang my doorbell while I wasn’t home only to aggravate my dog for no good reason.
It’s really simple to do: turn off the power – I’d like to say they are all low voltage, but you just never know how someone’s doorbell is wired. Unscrew the doorbell or if it’s attached with little nails, pry it. Disconnect the wires and tape them off.
I put my doorbell back together so it looked normal (otherwise people would bang on the door). Now, people press the button and think it works.
You know what? I wish I’d done it sooner. Turns out anyone who really needed me to answer the door knew my phone number.
3. Turn on a T.V or Radio when You Leave
If your dog is arthritic and having real mobility issues it might be beneficial to leave a tv or radio on when you leave. This helps drown out incidental noise such as children playing outside or other dogs barking, or the mail being delivered all which make your dog: “leap into action.”
At a certain point and as arthritis progresses, these extra precautions help keep your dog from injuring herself further while you’re not home.
4. Go For Arthritis Relief Walks
A sedentary lifestyle is not good for dogs with arthritis (or people). It’s important that your arthritic dog gets a beneficial walk every day. A beneficial walk for arthritis is one that doesn’t allow sniffing at every tree or post.
An arthritis relief walk starts slow for 5 minutes, and then you increase to a manageable pace for 10 full minutes, then a slower, cool down pace for the final 5 minutes.
Try to keep your arthritic dog moving non-stop for 20 minutes per day before allowing her discovery time. Or, even better would be 2 walks, each 20 minutes per day.
5. Cooked Sweet Potato
Most dog’s find sweat potato very easy to digest. Offering a cooked sweet potato will provide your dog with a beta-carotene boost which helps fight inflamation associated with arthritis.
Don’t add any butter or milk, just cook the sweet potato in the oven or stove-top in water and give some to your dog after it has cooled.
If your dog gets a little oily fish in the morning and a little sweet potato at night on a regular basis, it should help reduce the arthritis inflammation and the pain associated.
6. Limit Mobility Commands to Only When Necessary
Surely your dog has earned a lifetime supply of treats simply because they’re awesome. Now that your dog has arthritis and you’re trying to treat the condition at home, it’s a good time to stop insisting that your dog “sit”, “lay down” “shake paws” etc, in order to receive a treat.
If you still want your dog to perform for treats, you could ask for a kiss , hug or a bark or hide them in places that are easy to find and access.
7. Give Your Dog a Daily Massage
Massage therapy is great for arthritis and some pet boutiques charge big money for a dog massage. You can do this for free! Use long gentle strokes and always push blood toward your dog’s heart. Massage gets blood flowing to the arthritic area and can reduce pain and stiffness for several hours.
You can actually do this massage in combination with the next suggestion which is heat therapy.
8. Apply a Heating Pad
A dog’s arthritis can feel a lot better after a 15 minute round of heat therapy. Using your heating pad on LOW, sit with your dog and lay the pad on top of his arthritic spots. Don’t let your dog lay on the pad though as this promotes leaving your dog unattended. Put your hand between the pad and your dog regularly to check the temperature. It should just be warm, not hot.
A good way to verify your low setting is low enough is to place the heated pad against your inner thigh. If you can handle it, it should be okay for your dog. When in doubt, use a towel between the pad and your dog.
If you don’t have a heating pad, you can microwave dry peas, beans or rice and then put them into a ziploc bag. They will stay warm at least 20 minutes.
9. Keep Dog Nails Trimmed
Nails that impact a dog’s mobility can be heard. If you hear clicking when your dog walks, it’s time to cut her nails or have them done. One rogue toenail is enough to make your dog distribute her weight in a way that aggravates her arthritis.
To verify your dog’s nail length is not aggravating her arthritis, make sure you can slip a piece of paper between her nail and the floor when she’s standing. For a refresher on how to trim nails see this article: Senior Dog Nail Trimming.
10. Provide a dog bed in every room where family spends time.
Some dogs have one dog bed and it may not necessarily be available to the dog until bed time. This is fine with young dogs, but older, arthritic dogs need something to cushion their protruding joints wherever they spend time with humans.
If your arthritic dog is laying on a cold, wood floor of a game room while the kids play for hours at a time, your dog will thank you for placing a dog bed in the game room.
Now lets move on to products that can be added as budget permits.

What are some home remedies for dog arthritis?
By: Pet Vet El Segundo, CA
There are a few things that can be done to help relieve dog arthritis. You can give your pet aspirin- check with your vet for exact dosages or see Medication - Aspirin for Dogs (href: http://www.vetinfo.com/daspirin.html) for more guidance. It works just as well in dogs as it does in humans. Always start with a lower dose, say half a pill, and change the dosage as necessary. You can always offer prescription medicine from a vet such as Rymadil, but this should only be given when the symptoms and discomfort become more extreme due to the adverse side effects which include kidney damage. Unfortunately all dogs develop tolerances towards medication so it's best to avoid them if at all possible. You can also add glucosamine and chondroiten in their diet either as a supplement or as included premixed in the food you purchase. This is great for their joints. Finally, while running may be out of the question, maintaining basic exercise is critical such as keeping up regular walks
